Description |
English: In 1910, as more and more people began to travel by car, automobile clubs in Washington, Oregon, California, and British Columbia organized the Pacific Highway Association. The group chose an official North-South route on existing roads and placed Pacific Highway signs along the route to mark it. Outside of major cities, the roads were often unpaved.
This 1915 photo, taken south of Seattle, shows a group of Tacoma motorists driving along a stretch of the Pacific Highway on its opening day. About two thousand feet of temporary planking laid over the brick paving to protect it while the concrete hardened permitted the opening of the continuous hard surfaced road between Seattle and Tacoma two months early and in time for the annual session of the Washington legislature.
