The size of the checks will na-turally depend upon the fall and topog-raphy of the land, but as a rule a difler-ence in elevation of from 3 to 5 inchesbetween checks will be found satisfac-tory. The outside levees should have abase of at least 6 feet, a width on topof 2 feet, and be from 2 to 2.5 feet high.The most satisfactory levees are madewith a Fresno scraper, although the in-terior levees can often be made morecheaply with an implement known as acrowder or pusher. There are also vari-ous forms of land levelers on the marketthat do satisfactory work. Much of theland now in rice is poorly prepared, asevidenced by the fact that some placesreceive too much water, resulting indrowning out the crop, while other spotsarc too high to receive enough.
