Summary
[edit]DescriptionPachyrhizodus with preserved gut.jpg |
English: Pachyrhizodus sp. - fossil fish from the Cretaceous of Kansas, USA. (public display, Sternberg Museum of Natural History, Hays, Kansas, USA)
From museum signage: Pachyrhizodus with Preserved Intestine Intestines and other soft body parts rarely are preserved as fossils. Perhaps this fish was a deposit feeder, swallowing sediment to gather worms or other soft-bodied, burrowing creatures. Mud packed into the gut might have retained the shape of the intestines while the flesh decayed. Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Osteichthyes, Actinopterygii, Elopiformes, Pachyrhizodontidae Stratigraphy: Niobrara Formation (probably the Smoky Hill Chalk Member), Upper Cretaceous Locality: Trego County, western Kansas, USA |
