Residents of Tuyen Quang celebrating the Mid-Autumn festival with a self-designed and handcrafted structure, illustrating a carp

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Annually, citizens of a country whose culture revolve around the lunisolar calendar celebrates a festival known as the mid-autumn festival to celebrate the autumn harvest. In this picture is a structure of a Carp, hand-crafted using various materials such as colored paper and plastic sheets, decorated with colorful LED lights. This structure is made by citizens of different regions of the Tuyen Quang province in celebration. They are put on a large mobile platform, equipped with engines upon finishing, and will be driven out to the display area in Tuyen Quang city. This structure in particular shows a carp fish, a mythical animal in Vietnamese culture which is supposed to represent the three Kitchen Gods. Every year, before Tet is celebrated, we Vietnamese people release 3 carps into nearby bodies of water so that the Kitchen Gods could ascent and meet with the Jade Emperor, the ruler of heaven, and report news about the families that released them. In essence, what is being portrayed here perfectly encapsulates the atmosphere of holiday seasons in Vietnam as it celebrates one culture while still commemorating another.
