Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument where the Hoei Maru shipwreck lies in the shallow waters of Kure Atoll. The Hoei Maru was a Japanese whaling vessel that ran aground during such a ferocious storm that the ship broke in half. Now it is prime real estate for schooling fish such as yellowfin goatfish and yellowstripe goatfish. Photo Credit: Claire Fackler/NOAA |
