Photo credit: John Bernon, USAID Health Officer Country (region): Senegal (Kedougou) Community Health Worker, Toumany Tigina, enters a village girl's symptoms into a mobile application which facilitates early diagnosis and treatment of malaria. The app, designed by a US Peace Corps Volunteer in the community, walks community health workers through the first steps of collecting information about symptoms, administering a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT), and whether the case needs to be referred to the local health facility. Tigina is a DSDOM (Dispensateur de Soins à Domicile), meaning instead of waiting for community members exhibiting symptoms of malaria to come to the health facility, he proactively goes into numerous local communities to conduct home visits. During these visits he also encourages the community in the use of proven effective prevention methods such as Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Bed Nets (LLIN). Early detection, treatment and prevention are critical in reducing malaria mortality and morbidity. For this reason, DSDOMs are active in regions of high transmission, like Kedougou, and are supported by the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) and Senegal's National Malaria Control Program known as Programme National de Lutte Contre le Paludisme (PNLP). In strong partnership with PMI and USAID, Senegal has set the year 2020 as its goal for pre-elimination of malaria. The community-level work of DSDOMs, especially their advocacy for bed net usage, has proved an integral part of bringing Senegal one step closer to Eliminating Malaria For Good. |
