English: 080530-N-2296G-021 WESTERN PACIFIC, Philippines (May 30) – Philippines navy ship BRP Nicolas Mahusay (PG-116) crosses the bow of USS Ford (FFG 54), with support from United States Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau during a vessel board, search, and seizure (VBSS) exercise. Ford acted as a “suspect” ship with contraband, goods, and personnel. Naval forces from both countries boarded and searched the ship “arresting” several smugglers played by Ford crewmembers. The VBSS exercise is part of the Philippine phase of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2008. CARAT is an annual series of bilateral maritime training exercises between the United States and six Southeast Asia nations to build relationships and enhance the operational readiness of the participating forces.
