| Description |
Owl's Hole Cave, southwestern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas. Pit caves are enlarged solution tubes. In the area shown above, they descend vertically 5 to 10 meters and have irregularly subcircular plan-view shapes. Owl's Hole Cave is a large pit cave that extends 10 meters down to a floor of sediment fill. At and around the entrance, and exposed in the upper two-thirds of the cave walls, are rocks consisting of aragonitic, oolitic calcarenitic eolianite limestones of the French Bay Member of the Grotto Beach Formation (lower Upper Pleistocene). The rocks at the bottom of the cave (not shown in the above photo) are aragonitic, biogenic calcarenitic eolianite limestones of the Owl's Hole Formation (Middle Pleistocene). The two units are separated by a calcrete paleosol horizon. Eroded remnants of another calcarete paleosol occur at the surface, surrounding the cave entrance. |
