"UNVEILING THE OUTRAN! STATUE AT CALCUTTA. It was during the term of office of Lord NorthbrooV (1872 to 1876) that the ceremony of unveiling the statue to Sir James Outram took place. Outram, the hero of Lucknow — Outram, the Bayard of India, as his friends loved to call this chivalrous and daring soldier—well earned the gratitude of the Government of India. The spirited equestrian statue, which the Viceroy is unveiling in official pomp, stands on the Maidan—a great open space at Calcutta. In the foreground are the long lines of the British and native troops, the pennonsof the Lancers adding brightness to the ceremony. On the horizon we catch a glimpse of the waters of the Hooghley. The name of the Commander in-Chief of the troops present, that of Lord Napier of Magdala, recalls a warrior-family to whom India—and, indeed, every part of the- Empire— owes a debt of gratitude for faithful and heroic service." |
