Yet she stood itundaunted and emerged from the testwithout showing a mark of the terrificpounding she had received. There are now held yearly in the Eastabout a dozen important long-distanceraces open to all, besides many clubcruises which are also competitive, andthe boats that take part in them aredrawn principally from the triangularracing classes. In some of these eventsprofessional crews are allowed, but inothers only Corinthians may be used.Skippers seem to prefer good amateurs,anyhow, when they can get them, forthey take keener interest in the contestand are generally more willing to spareno pains to win. RACING IN SMALL SAILBOATS 621 There is evidence of the growing pop-ularity of long-distance racing in thenumber of yachtsmen who will any dayabandon triangular courses for it, and itis not difficult to explain the preference,for there is a great deal more to it, a fargreater variety of happenings. Condi-tions are often met which one seldom,if ever, encounters in afternoon racing,and weather of several different kindsmay be ones lot in the same race. A brief outline of last summers con-test for the Brooklyn Yacht ClubsOcean Cup, in which the writer sailedon the Waialua, will serve to give agood idea of the diversity of experienceone may enjoy on such trips. The course lay from off Echo Bay toVineyard Sound Lightship and aroundit, then outside Block Island and LongIsland to Sheepshead Bay, a distance oftwo hundred and eighty nautical miles.The first part of the journey was cov-ered under spinnakers, with a moderatebreeze and ideal fair weather.
