Text Appearing Before Image:
Bay, six miles south of Monterey, and many lesser but equally beautifulbeaches, noted for pebbles, shells or sea-weed, belong to the Monterey group andhelp to make the fame of the district.Much of the old town remains as it wasa century ago, and the ancient Spanish r eg iIII ecan bes t u d i edhere aswell as All the places I have been describingare easily accessible from San Francisco. The metropolis itself becomes the winterhome of large numbers of Eastern andAustralian tourists, on account of itsfine hotels and places of amusement andthe cheap excursions mto the country.Four hours journey takes one to SantaCruz, or the entire length of the nearercoast valleys. Monte Diablo, MountTamalpais and Mount Hamilton are allwithin easy reach for winter expeditions.Across the bay are Oakland, Alameda,Berkeley and the State University. Downthe San Mateo peninsula is Palo Alto, thesite of the future Stanford University. At least a dozen mineral springs of reputeand health resorts, open all the year
Text Appearing After Image:
In Call f ornia.Old town Mon-terey is hauntedby the sketcherand the amateurpho tographer, and so are the old whaling stationand the Chinese fisher village. Monterey has a most delightfulclimate. The temperature is veryseldom lower than 24 in midwm-ter, nor higher than 80° in midsum-mer. The difference between themean temperature of January andJuly is not more than 6°. Bathing goeson throughout the year. On the beach, near the Del Monte Hotel, are four im-mense tanks constantly supplied withpure salt water, heated and graduated todifferent degrees of temperature. Mostbathers prefer these tanks in winter, butmany enjoy the open surf outside. Thelake, the old oaks, ivy clad and pic-turesque, the Arizona garden, and the im-mediate surroundings of Del Monte arevery attractive to tourists, and the hotelitself is one of the largest and most widelyknown on the Pacific Coast. I am toldthat the deep-water fishing off Montereyis attracting many sportsmen to theplace. •yc-\e. <f•^ I* Y&gt
