BAKER THE argument generally advanced infavor of scholastic athletics, ap-plies to schools for the blind; butthere are especial reasons why the blindboy needs vigorous play. Groping. indarkness, he has been made timid by ahundred knocks. Instead of being hard-ened by his experience, the uncertainty ofthese knocks makes him peculiarly hesi-tating in his movements. The constantstrain on his nerves of this expectancy ofa hurt is debilitating and hence the greatmajority of blind boys take exercise nomore strenuous than a walk or a sun bath.Blind boys are like all other boys in theirimpulses and desires. It is as natural forthem as it is for those with vision to bebounding and buoyant. Strength of limband dexterity of movement are as muchadmired and as eagerly emulated by themas by others of their age. The play in-stinct is as active among the sightless asamong the seeing.
