When the tarpon had had fun enoughwith me in shallow water it led me backto the deeper river. I nearly capsizedthe canoe as I got aboard while playingthe fish, which cavorted up and downand across the stream, leaping severalfeet in the air every minute or two fora quarter of an hour before yielding. In two days I had a score of strikesand landed half that number of tarponafter an average contest of an hour witheach. The largest one was four feetlong and weighed therefore about thirty-two pounds, but it was an exceptionallyactive fish and wore itself out in half anhour by a series of frantic leaps, one ofwhich took it over the bow of the canoewithin reach of my hand. During the two days fishing therewas seldom an interval of ten minutesbetween the landing of one tarpon andthe strike of its successor.
