Pass 411 finished Indian canoes fashioned from thetrunks of great cypress trees that grew onits banks. Wild turkeys were abundantand tame, deer plentiful, and we flushed anumber of flocks of quail. We had carriedno guns in the Glades; it was weeks sincewe had eaten a Christian meal and there-fore it was that no scrap of the turkeygobbler that was served for our first supperwas left over for breakfast. It may havebeen a tame turkey—I asked no questions—but that night, as I rested on a fragrant herbs and vines, giving names and charac-teristics, knowledge born of a trip with abotanist. Cattle recognized his voice atthe distance of a mile, half-wild razor-backsbrought their families to him from half thatdistance and owls held conversation v/ithhim at night. When we traveled after darkthe camera-man and I rode in the cart. Byday we could see the venomous snakes whichfilled the fields and swamps and overflowedupon the road. I dont know how many wekilled. We were at it most of the time.
