at this time, also, that JeanLe Bossu, the little hunchback from theGrand Woods, became strangely inter-ested in the old mans gold. He didnot. go about in the woodland diggingpits in the ground, for after one care-ful inspection he saw that the moneyhad not been buried there. Le Bossuhad lived all his life in the woods, andthere was little that he could not readin the open book of Nature. Accord-ingly, he began to haunt the cabin itself,dropping in upon the old man at allsorts of odd moments, and soon astrange intimacy sprang up between thetwo. Old Andre seemed almost to care forLe Bossu, for, like himself, the hunch-back was silent and morose, sitting forhours at a time in silence, staringstraight before him. Also, Le Bossuseldom came without some gift of gameor fruit, so that the old mans need ofprovisions became small indeed. When the people at Landry ques-tioned Le Bossu about this business, hemade a most astonishing reply. And do you think that you will findthe gold? they asked.
