Mrs. Huntington Smith, presi-dent of the Animal Rescue League, towhose untiring efforts the establishment ofPine Ridge Farm is due, in her addressbefore the National Humane Association, recently described an instance which illus-trates the good influence such homes haveupon the owners of poor horses: A bay mare, Nellie, was brought to ourHome of Rest by her owner, an express-man. He had let her out to a man whohad nearly killed her with starvation andill-treatment. She was very thin, verylame, and had raw sores on her legs andshoulders. Her temper had been so in-jured that even her owner was afraid ofher. In a months time she was a changedhorse. The sores were healed, she hadtaken on many pounds of flesh, her lame-ness was better, and her disposition affec-tionate and kind. Her owner gave her avacation of over two months, visiting herfrom time to time, and then came afterher, but promised to bring her back
