As the name indicates, Chacala is ofIndian origin, and its battered appear-ance bears out its claim to antiquity.Down through the center of the townruns one long street with one-storyhouses of adobe and brick massed solidlytogether on either side. The tiled roofsof those on the north, supported by arow of pillars reaching the length of thestreet, extend over the wide sidewalk ofwell-worn brick. There are other streetsreaching out from a small central plaza,but they are narrow and crooked andscarcely more than alleyways. The place has a romantic situation,under the shadow of the towering peaksof the Sierra Madres. A small but tur-bulent river flows out of a canon andthrough a deep gulch on the north ofthe village. High and rugged hills riseeverywhere, their steep sides here andthere dotted with fields of ripening cornor green patches of maguey, the latter
