It was morning—just sunrise — when we metthe American fleet homewardbound; it was morning whenwe caught the first glimpse ofMadeira and steamed into theharbor of Funchal; the shoresof Morocco—our first glimpseof the Orient—came out of thesunrise, and it was just sunrisethis morning when I looked outof my porthole on the blue har-bor and terraced architecture ofAlgiers. And the harbor of Al- .giers is blue, and the terracedarchitecture is white, or creamy,and behind it are the hills ofvivid green. And there arepalms and cypress trees, andbougainvillea and other climb-ing vines. Viewed from theship it is a picture city, andframed in the porthole it becamea landscape miniature of won-drous radiance and vivid hues. One of our passengers, a hap-py-hearted, elderly Hebrew soul, came along the promenade just outside The Orient and the Occident have metmy stateroom and surveyed the vision here, and the Occident has conquered,
