t had not ventured todisturb me. It is characteristic of them that they will not awaken a slumberingwhite man. The traveling was much improved,the drivers pushed the dogs as rapidlyas possible, and progress was good. Onan island that we passed I killed threeArctic hares with my .22 automaticrifle, and Okspuddyshou killed five, awelcome variety to our diet. The Arctichare is several times larger than our or-dinary hare and the flesh is even morepalatable. I shall never forget the feast thatthose Eskimos had when we next halted.I made a careful note of what the sixmen consumed within three hours—seven hares, one seal, about a bucketfulof dried walrus meat prepared by Dr.Cook for dog food while at Annootok,and two large cups of tea and four bis-cuits per man. A good part of the sealand all the hare meat they ate raw, likehungry dogs. I trained my cameraupon them, but Eskimos have a decidedobjection to being photographed whilethey eat, and out of respect to their\\ ishes I desisted. 274

Camp was made a few hundredyards from land. I insisted that allshould be made snug before the cachewas opened, and every one worked withfeverish haste. Finally, wThen camp wasin order and I gave the wTord, theyrushed forward.
