I CHAPTER XXXIV. THE THAMES If you stand high on the western brink of theCotswold Hills in Gloucestershire, you see a broadfertile valley several hundred feet below you.Twenty miles away to the west, on the far side ofthis valley, is the beautiful jagged outline of theMalvern Hills, and midway you may often detectthe silvery bends of the Severn River. Behindthe Malverns in very clear weather is the darkedge of the Welsh mountains. All this you mayimagine from your map, if you find the Cotswold Hills. Now turn your back on the western landscape,and walk over the flat top of the Cotswolds for amile or two, till you come to little rills of waterflowing eastward. These are the sources of theThames. They begin in springs Avhere the waterbubbles up from the ground. You must rememberthat all the rainwater does not flow off the surfaceof the land, but some of it filters down, and havingjourneyed for a time underground, rises againhere and there as a spring.
