It is generally understood when aman takes the trouble to build a chickenhouse as large as this that he.is plan-ning to keep pure breed poultry. Thereis a satisfaction about pure bred foulsthat only those who have studied themcan understand. To some farmers onehen is as valuable as another, becausethey have never given much attentionto breeding. They agree that pigs ispigs. In handling poultry in a house likethis, one compartment should be usedfor the breeding stock. When feedingthe chickens in the fall and early winter,it is easy to pick out the best hens andpullets for breeding purposes. A pen of fifteen or twenty selectedhens will lay eggs for the foundationof a very valuable lot of poultry.
