Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1896, this Beaux Arts-style commercial building was designed by Edward A. Kent for William Otto, serving as commercial office building with retail space on the ground floor. Edward A. Kent, the architect, would later die in 1912 during the sinking of the Titanic, after assisting other passengers board the limited lifeboats. The building is clad in white terra cotta with four bays on the first floor, occupied by retail storefronts, with very simple detailing. The second and third floors feature a single recessed curtain wall with Chicago-style tripartite windows and metal spandrel panels, fluted ionic columns and pilasters with egg and dart motif on the capitals, doric pilasters at the ends of the facade, cartouches above the pilasters, and a cornice at the sill line of the third floor with egg and dart motif trim. The third floor features smaller windows with decorative pediments above each window, supported by brackets at the ends, and with cartouches and decorative reliefs within each pediment, with the fourth floor windows featuring simpler trim, being recessed and flanked by doric pilasters with circular panels outlined with intricate trim, with lions heads above them. Above the fourth floor is the architrave, which features bands of egg and dart motif trim, oxeye attic windows with decorative intricate trim surrounds, and is topped with a cornice with dentils, rosettes, and intricate modillions, which runs along the face of the parapet that encloses the building’s low-slope roof. To the sides and rear, the building’s facades are simpler, and clad in brick. The building today is known as Theater Place, and houses apartments on the upper floors, with a deli in one of the retail spaces on the ground floor.
