Chez les poissons, l'âge est estimé à partir de l'analyse de pièces calcifiées (écaille, otolithe, vertèbre ... ) qui présentent des couches concentriques successives traduisant la croissance somatique. L'otolithe, situé dans l'oreille interne, est le plus utilisé en écologie.
