nd door leads on to theNorth Court, bounded on the right by the Chapel, which isapproached by a double tlight of granite steps. The Chapel has St. flDicbacIs flDount I9 been altered and restored at various times ; but the walls arevery old, and may have formed part of William of MortainsChapel. The large organ, which conceals a good rose window, wasplaced there bySir John St. Au-byn towards theend of the XVllIcentury, and thestalls in the chan-cel are of thesame date. Un-der one of theseats of thesestalls a few stepslead down into asmall vault, witha bricked-up win-dow that origin-ally opened on tothe South Court.This was discov-ered in 1725, andin it was foundthe skeleton of aman seven feethigh, together with a pitcher and platter. Nothing whatever is known aboutthis skeleton, who the man was or how he came there. It wasburied again in the North Court outside the Chapel, where itwas found again about thirty years ago, and then finally interredin the cemetery at the foot of the Mount.

No one knows whenthe large silver candlesticks, of foreign manufacture, were broughthere. A narrow staircase leads to the top of the tower, whencea magnificent view is obtained on a fine day — the broken out-line of the semicircle of granite hills which inclose MountsBay on the west, north and east, contrasting with the solemnlylevel horizon of the ocean, which stretches away on the southand west in an unbroken expanse to the distant shores of SouthAmerica. At the south-west corner of the tower are the remains ofa stone lantern, which probably served as a beacon — perhapsthe earliest specimen of a lighthouse in these seas. The outerpart is broken away, and the remainder goes by the name ofSt. Michaels Chair, and is reputed to have the property of con-ferring the supremacy in domestic matters on the husband orwife who succeeds i
