Revision comment

[edit]

The earlier version of Orbit.svg labeled True anomaly incorrectly as Mean anomaly. This version corrects that. With this change, the illustration still serves the articles it supports since there is some flexibility in presenting certain orbital elements. In particular, one has flexibility in expressing where an object is at a particular time. Based on a patient reading of orbital elements, one may state a time, the 'epoch', and use the other elements to work out the position. One may also state a position and use this with the other elements to work out the time since periapsis passage. Here true anomaly, a rotation of a vector rooted at the focus and measured from periapsis, serves as such a position. Since we are not obliged to illustrate mean anomaly, it seemed easier to just relabel this diagram correctly. Such a change is easy since Arpad Horvath furnished an SVG file. With this change, I believe I've addressed the issues raised by myself and and can remove the 'Caveat' and cleanup request tag. What I haven't addressed is the corresponding changes to Image:Orbit_hu.svg. Alas, my command of Hungarian is suspect and trust that Arpad Horvath might rise to the occasion. -- Garry R.
