Description
English: Redbeds in the Permian/Triassic of South Dakota, USA.

This is a typical exposure of redbeds of the Spearfish Formation in the Black Hills area of western South Dakota. The Black Hills are cored by Precambrian basement consisting of igneous and metamorphic rocks. This central area is surrounded & flanked by uplifted Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks. The Spearfish Formation is an upper Paleozoic to lower Mesozoic succession of reddish-brown colored, terrestrial, hematite-rich siliciclastic sedimentary rocks - principally relatively soft mudshales.

Locality: cut on the southern side of Interstate 90, near the town of Sturgis, northeastern flanks of the Black Hills, western South Dakota, USA
