Summary
[edit]DescriptionOpening of the North-South Route.jpg |
English: I'm fond of metal plaques which celebrate past vainglories.
This photo was in the forecourt of Tottenham Hale Station. It marked the 1990 opening of the road linking the North Circular Road with Tottenham's one-way system. (Here, the road is called the 'North South Road'. it was later renamed Watermead Way and Meridian Way.) On 18 June 2008 the plaque had a green and pleasant setting. Following previous prolonged complaints by me and Lorna Reith (then a fellow Tottenham Hale ward councillor) Haringey Parks Team ensured that the landscaped areas of the station forecourt (owned by Haringey) were reasonably well looked-after. _________________ The road was built following a successful local community campaign to divert the appalling traffic which used to rat-run through residential roads in Tottenham Hale ward - causing injury and at least one death. This important real history was left off the plaque. We used to live in a small flat on Shelbourne Road one of the rat-run roads. There was fairly constant stream of thundering trucks and cars. Even crossing the road to walk our daughter to school was a dangerous manoeuvre. |
