Description |
500px provided description: Abandoned open pit mine of the former Homestake Gold Mine (now the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center) in Lead, South Dakota. Hometake mine stopped production of gold in 2001 and is now the Sanford Underground Laboratory home of the Large Underground Xenon experiment to detect the presence of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPS). This open pit mine was abandoned many years before the closure of the gold mine in favor of a rabbit warren of mine shafts.
