Omphalotus illudens (Schwein.) Bresinsky & Besl Image location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Large and dense clusters of fresh fruitbodies arranged into a fairy ring shape. They were growing near a young tree that was probably planted on the site of an old oak that once stood there (there are old oaks on either side of the street for as far as the eye could see). Amazingly, you can go to maps.google and use the street view to see the fruiting as it looked when that picture was taken. Since the street view dates back to at least a year ago, these mushrooms must have been fruiting there for years with regularity. I should go there at night to see how they glow in the dark. :-) Recognized by sight
