Summary

Description

Although I don't think I was supposed to be allowed onto the field, I have entered the field area of Olympic Stadium in Chamshil (Jamsil).

This is the cauldron used during the 1988 Summer Olympics.

One key flaw of the Olympic Stadium in Seoul is that the accommodations for the Olympic Flame were not properly incorporated into the architecture. This add-on had to be built just in time for Opening Day on 17 September 1988. Three torch runners gathered at the platform at the pedestal, and the platform rose to the torch level for the lighting.

During the Opening Ceremony, live pigeons were released to symbolize world peace. Sadly, some of the pigeons were sitting on top, and were roasted alive when the flame was lit. As a result, live pigeons were never used again for Olympic opening ceremonies.

Seoul was also the very last time the Summer Olympics opened with a Saturday daytime opening ceremony. Due to the heat at many Olympic host cities, all opening ceremonies after Seoul have been held the previous Friday evening.

As this photo dates from 1994, titles are done in the internationally accepted McCune-Reischauer Romanization that South Korea used at this time, with Revised Romanization, South Korea's current Romanization system, in parentheses for cross-reference.
