Summary

[edit]
Description Despite Whittier’s continuing prosperity into the 1920s, the town’s commercial base began to gravitate away from its historical location around the railroad depot on the Swain County side of the Tuckaseigee River, and towards the newly-designated US Highway 19 on the Jackson County side of the river. The town of Whitter, North Carolina was split in half by the river, which forms the boundary between the two counties, with the Jackson County side initially being more residential, with the Swain County side being more commercial. The arrival of the highway and the massive economic hit the town took during the Great Depression fundamentally altered how the town’s development occurred, with the remaining businesses being located solely on the Jackson County side of the river. The Revis Store, constructed in 1926, was one of the first businesses to take advantage of the new highway, and remained in their original building until 1984, when they built a new building across the street. The original building is currently vacant and for sale, and can hopefully be put to productive use, despite the difficulty of its location alongside a road with no sidewalks and very limited parking.
