[edit]DescriptionOldSewickleyTrainStation.jpg |
English: Picture of the Old Sewickley Train Station located at 20 Chadwick Street in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, on July 20, 2010. Built in 1887, the building is on the List of Pittsburgh Landmarks recognized by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation (PHLF). Architectural style: Tudor Revival.
Built by the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway in 1887, and later owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad, this old station was originally located at the foot of Broad Street in Sewickley. At that time, rail lines ran along what is now Ohio River Boulevard. In October 1929, the station was lifted from its foundation and moved via flatbed rail car to Chadwick Street, a feat so unusual that it made Robert L. Ripley's syndicated newspaper cartoon series "Believe It Or Not." The station was converted into a home and served as such until it was purchased by the American Legion Walter Robinson Post 450 in 1944.[1] The building still houses American Legion Walter Robinson Post 450. This African American Legion has been around since Sept. 28, 1922, during the days of segregation, and has been housed at this location since Dec. 30, 1944.[2] The legion was named in honor of Walter Raleigh Robinson, a Leet Township native who died Jan. 23, 1921, from the lingering effects of being gassed in battle in France during WWI.[3] Over the years, many prominent African-American musicians have performed at this location, including: Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Bull Moose Jackson, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Domino, Jackie Wilson, Lloyd Price and Ray Charles.[4] |
