Oklahoma State Capitol

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1914-1917, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by Solomon Andrew Layton to serve as the Oklahoma State Capitol, following the move of the Oklahoma State Government to Oklahoma City from Guthrie in 1910. The building is clad in limestone with corinthian columns and pilasters lining the exterior, a large corinthian south entrance portico below a pediment with acroterions at the corners and peak, a dome rising from a drum with a colonnade of paired corinthian columns flanking window bays, with a lantern and statue at the top of the dome, which rise to a height of 255 feet (78 meters), porticoes with engaged columns below pediments at the center of the east, west, and north facades, one-over-one windows, and arched window bays on the second floor. Inside, the capitol houses meeting chambers for the Oklahoma House of Representatives and Oklahoma Senate, as well as government offices, a judicial chamber for the Oklahoma Supreme Court, and a large rotunda below the dome with decorative murals and a coffered domed ceiling. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Today, the building remains the seat of the Oklahoma State Government, and dominates the skyline of the west side of Oklahoma City.
