October snow, Froyle Road

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: October snow, Froyle Road This stretch of downland road is at an elevation of 210m or more, so snow settles more readily here than elsewhere. Even so, it was unusual to find so much on the branches at around 10am on 29 October, the sun having been up for almost three hours.

The snow hung around in pockets till the next day, but the dusting on the branches was long gone by then.

In fact, snow in October in this part of the world is extremely rare. Sleet or wet snow falls in the South-East on average about once every ten years, but the last time it settled was in 1926. And the last time there was as much on the ground was in 1880. [Information provided by meteorologist Philip Eden.]
