While you’re probably imagining the massive ice breaker muscling its way through the ice, Motz said that’s not exactly how it’s done. “They’re not necessarily pushing through the ice, they’re actually kind of ramming up onto the ice and then allowing the weight of the ship to come down and literally break the ice,” she explained. Montalvo explained that the Polar Star had to break the ice along the same track several times because it would re-freeze. “The first few weeks we were down there, we were just cutting and widening the channel so the container ship could fit,” she said, adding that Polar Star had to make sure the ice wasn’t closing in on the container ship as it passed through the channel. |
