inck, and otherinvestigators, however, agree that the trouble is not caused by thelack of any soil nutrients. It appears, so far as my own investigationsgo, that the trouble can not be cured by giving the plants additionalfood of any kind. Overfeeding with nitrogen favors the developmentof the disease, and there is some evidence that excess of nitrates in thecells may cause the excessive development of the ferments causing thedisease. Very slight attacks of the disease known as mottled top aresaid not to injure the qualhry of the leaf to a sufficient extent to benoticeable commercial^, though they are less elastic and have a poorerburn and aroma than healthy leaves. It is hoped that the observations brought together in this papermay at least help those who are investigating this trouble to solve theproblem of its control. a See Report 65, U. S.
