Summary
[edit]DescriptionObelisk, Hoo Hill - geograph.org.uk - 1192490.jpg |
English: Obelisk, Hoo Hill The obelisk supposedly marks the site of the Chapel of St Leonard at Hoo, demolished in 1538 during King Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. Bones and gravestones were uncovered by excavators building the Trent Valley Railway (Rugby-Stafford) in 1847, so revealing the site. At some time in the following 20 years the landowner, Sir George Chetwynd of Grendon Hall, had the obelisk erected, but whether on the present spot is an open question. It is almost black and very knocked about - was it taken down during opencast coal mining in the 1960s and put back up later? The research goes on. |
