1942: General Leslie Groves. The Army Corps of Engineers forms the Manhattan Engineer District—known as the Manhattan Project—to manage the construction of plants for producing fissionable materials. By September, General Leslie Groves takes charge and makes the decision to buy 59,000 acres of land in East Tennessee that will come to be known as Oak Ridge and house the K-25 and Y-12 sites to separate uranium and the X-10 site to demonstrate plutonium production and separation. |
