Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Stage 2 of the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway (OPPP): conversion of ribulose-5-phosphate into intermediates of glycolysis.

Ru5P is transformed into phosphorylated three-carbon and six-carbon intermediates of glycolysis by a series of isomerization and epimerization reactions.

The oxidative pentose phosphate pathway serves to produce NADPH, the reducing power for biosynthetic reactions. NADPH is also used to preserve the reduced form of glutathione.
