Summary

[edit]
Description Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Bhaktapur, Nepal, has several notable ancient temples, as you have seen earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). Two of the most notable ones are a Krishna temple, now sadly destroyed completely in the devastating 2015 earthquake, and this one. This is the Nyatapola temple in the Bhaktapur Durbar Sqr. Nyatapola in the local Newari language means five stories - symbolic of five basic elements. The Nyatapola temple considered to have the biggest and highest temple pagoda in Nepal, built to architectural perfection and artistic beauty. The square on which the Nyatapola temple is located- this one- is called the Taumadhi Square The temple is open to the public only once in a year - during the Hindu festival of Dashain (known as Dusshera in India). Of course, 'open to all' means the usual restrictions apply- HIndus only, no cameras or leather goods inside etc. The Nyatapola temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Shiddhilaxmi. The animal figures lining both sides of the stairs are the dwarapalas or guardians. There is usually only a pair on either side of the steps in Hindu temples, but here ten of them- the presiding goddess here must be quite something, to need that much protection! It is said that it took three generations to complete that temple. The temple is also known to the locaks as the Pancha Tale Mandira, which literally translates as five level (storeyed) temple.
