Summary

[edit]
Description A southern sea otter grooms while her pup nurses in Moss Landing, Calif. Female sea otters expend enormous amounts of energy on pup-rearing, which they do without assistance from the pup's father. By the time the pup nears weaning at around 6 months of age, the mother's daily energy demands are almost twice what they are when she does not have a pup to care for. In areas where sea otter densities are high and per capita prey resources are limited, these energy demands can make females thin and susceptible to any additional sources of stress. The disturbance of females with pups in these areas can be especially harmful. Photo by Lilian Carswell/USFWS.
