English: In 1904, Sandusky, Ohio resident E. Field was the "wire chief" at the local branch of the Bell Telephone Company. His attic was infested with rodents, whose nightly activities disturbed his sleep. Field noticed that, when he made a sudden loud noise, the rodent activity would temporarily cease. He therefore set up an electric gong in his attic, controlled by a button by his bedside. |
