Mit einer Kupfertafel. 63 \ 493 Bei der Betrachtung des zahlreichen Heers von Schlangen,womit die Urwildnisse von Brasilien bevolkert sind, drangensich dem Beobachter sogleich mehrere Bemerkungen auf,welche von einem allgemeinen Interesse sind. — Das Erste,was uns auffallt, ist das .Verhaltniss der schadlichen zu denunschadlichen Arten; es beweisst, dass man die Gefahr, vongiftigeu Schlangen gebissen zu werden, ohne Grund bei wei-tem iibertrieben habe. Man hat dieses Verhaltniss gewohn-lich wie i :6 angenommen, welches auch meine Beobachtun-gen bestatigen; denn ich lernte in Brasilien etwa 5 bis 6 gif-tige und 38 unschadliche Schlangenarten kennen. — Zu die-ser Bemerkung, dass die schadlichen Thiere dieser Familieweit seltner sind, als die unschadlichen, kann man nochhinzufiigen, dass die letzteren auch an Individuen weit zahl-reicher scheinen
