[edit]DescriptionNorthern Pacific Minnetonka 1939.jpg |
Photo of the Northern Pacific locomotive the Minnetonka being prepared for the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. The locomotive was built by Smith and Porter, Philadelphia in 1871 and shipped west to San Francisco. From there, it was transported by ship to en:Kalama, Washington. It was originally put into service between Duluth and Brainerd, Minnesota and then worked between Kalama and Tacoma, Washington. It was sold in 1886 and then went to work for a logging company. The Minnetonka worked at hauling timber until 1928. The locomotive survived a devastating forest fire on the middle fork of the in 1902; after 1928, it was abandoned in an area forest until 1935. The Northern Pacific brought the locomotive to their shops for restoration. By 1939, the restoration was completed and The Minnetonka was sent to the 1939 World's Fair. It is now at the en:Lake Superior Railroad Museum still in operating condition. |
