English: The Northern Canal was built in 1847 and is part of the Lowell Canal System. This panoramic image is a composite of two prints of photographs taken in the autumn of 1982.
The Lowell Locks and Canals Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976; the American Society of Civil Engineers list of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks (#114) in 1984; and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) list of Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmarks (#107) in 1985.
