Page Two NORTH CAROLINA CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE July 25, 1912 Sketches of a Notable Country Church LITTLEJOHNS CHURCH • . Lenoir Circuit This more than a century old place of worshipand gospel preaching is situated near Hartland inthe northwest part of Caldwell county, seven mileswest of Lenoir, from which town the circuit takesits name. The church took its name from a familyof that name prominent in its membership in theearly days of its history, a few of whom still lingerin the sommunity and are connected with thechurch. Among them, Mrs. Mattie LittlejohnArney and her brother, Mr. Ivey Littlejohn. Thefirst two churches built on these sacred groundswere Union churches. The first one stood nearthe center of the rear portion of the present grave-yard. The oldest grave-stone still clearly shows1778 as the date of the death of its occupant. Itis said that among the first burials there was thatof a soldier of the war of the Revolution who, justafter the battle of Kings Mountain was passingth
