Description |
Arrival of Capt. John Meares at Nootka harbour (Vancouver island) in 1788, where he intended to build a permanent British settlement. This scene shows Meares' ships firing canons and a cutter on the shore as natives in boats look on & point to the activities on the beach where British flags are flying. From the French Edition of John Meares' Voyages, titled “Collection De Cartes Geographiques, Vues, Marines, Plans et Portraits Aux Voyages Du Capitaine J. Meares”. First published in England in 1790 and in France in 1794. |
