Summary
[edit]DescriptionNo.D1705 (BR no.47117) Sparrowhawk (Class 47) (6778706087) (2).jpg | The first of the Brush type four locomotives were built in 1963. The intention had been for the original batch of 20 to be 'Peak' class locomotives, but this was altered to a new design with an up-rated version of the engine installed in a new, monocoque, lightweight bodyshell. A total of 512 of the class 47 where built by Brush and Crewe over the next four years, making them the most common main line diesel locomotive in the country. As mixed traffic locomotives they provided motive power everywhere from Penzance to Inverness, hauling everything from express passenger trains to merry-go-round coal trains and local goods trains. D1705 was one of only five locomotives to be built with 12LVA24 Vee-shaped engines, which where known as the class 48. It ran with this engine for four years after construction in November 1965, after which is was fitted with the standard twin-bank engines, making it a class 47. It was first allocated to Darnell in Sheffield, and was last allocated to Tinsley, again in Sheffield, but spent much of its life at Stratford in east London. It was renumbered to 47117 in March 1974, and was in BR blue livery on withdrawal in July 1991 |
