The Nili Fossae region as imaged by Viking Orbiter 1 on January 25, 1977. This image was taken as part of a mapping sequence in the Syrtis Major region. This region lies along the northwestern edge of the 1500 km wide Isidis Basin. The nested, arc-shaped canyons mark fault systems created by the impact. Nili Fossae is now known to be one of the most mineralogically diverse regions on the Martian surface. The canyons have been extensively filled by clay-rich sediments, and the plateaus contain some of the largest exposures of carbonate on the Martian surface. This carbonate rock contains small amounts of Mars' ancient carbon dioxide atmosphere, making the region a prime candidate landing site for the Curiosity and Mars 2020 missions. The Mars 2020 mission is targeting Jezero Crater, which is located just to the south of this image. In the extended mission, it may collect some of these carbonate-containing rocks from the southern canyons of the Nili Fossae system. This image was taken on January 25, 1977 during Viking Orbiter 1's 216th orbit around Mars. It is a mosaic of 25 frames taken through the spacecraft's clear filter.
