Description

Ге Николай. Смерть Виргинии. 1857

Эскиз неосуществленной картины. 1857-1858. Холст, масло. 43 х 57. Сюжет взят художником из истории Античного Рима. Децемвир Аппий Клавдий, один из коллегии десяти законодателей, воспылал тайной страстью к дочери уважаемого центуриона. Он задумал хитростью овладеть ею и сговорился с одним из тех, кто от него зависел, что тот заявит, будто девушка эта ранее была рабыней, и приведет обвиняемую к Аппию, который вынесет приговор в пользу своего сообщника. Но прежде чем ее увели, явившийся отец Виргинии схватил в лавке мясника нож и заколол ее. Эскиз неосуществленной картины.

Поступила в государственный Русский музей в 1918 году из собрания Я.Е. Жуковского.
